Grad Donates $1,600 Scholarship

When Dennis Bralic bid successfully on an addition to Centennial High School in Coquitlam, it was the start of a trip down memory lane.

Mr. Bralic, president and owner of Zagreb Construction Ltd., won a $2.4 million contract to add a new gym, office and recreational area and for some seismic upgrading to the original Centennial school. The work was completed on time and on budget in June 2003.

"When I started working there, it brought back all sorts of memories," he says, explaining he was raised in Coquitlam and graduated from Centennial in 1981.
The idea to offer a $1,600 scholarship just hit him one day during a site meeting.

"I remembered walking through the school during my grad year: I was applying for university and I can remember thinking wouldn't it be nice to have some extra cash to help towards all my living expenses.

"I have such fond memories of Centennial and all the great instructors I had here so I thought I'd like to give something back." And two recent grads are the deserving recipients.

Brendan Casidy and David MacDonald have received $800 each to help them achieve their educational plans.

Mr. Casidy - who earned a 100% score in both his drafting classes - will be going for his degree at UBC (University of British Columbia) and then plans to continue on at the university to study architecture.

Mr. MacDonald earned a 100% score in carpentry/joinery, wood products manufacturing, Wood Links 12 (a joint program run by UBC in conjunction with the construction industry), and career prep classes.  He wants to be a teacher - he has already taught wood carving and turning to adult students, and will be teaching a course on 18th century chainmail starting this October.  His plans include working for a year and then taking a 2-year trades degree at BCIT (BC Institute of Technology), before continuing at UBC to get his teaching degree.

Mr. Bralic's own past sounds similar to the young grads' future plans.

He first took pre-engineering science courses at SFU (SimonFraserUniversity) before completing his diploma in civil and structural engineering at BCIT, and finishing his schooling with a civil engineering degree at UBC.
